New York’s apple industry is supported by a grower-funded Apple Marketing Order (AMO) — a structure that has been in place since 1959, when a majority of New York State apple growers first voted to invest in the collective promotion of their product. Under the AMO, growers pay an assessment that funds promotional programs, grower communications, and consumer research. These assessments are collected by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM). Since 1994, NYSDAM has contracted with NYAA to administer those funds on the industry’s behalf, ensuring that grower dollars are put to work effectively and transparently. An advisory board appointed by the Commissioner of Agriculture — made up of state apple growers, packers, and storage operators — advises NYSDAM on how AMO funds are contracted each year. Growers have the opportunity to reaffirm the AMO at least every eight years, keeping the structure accountable to the people it serves. For more information about the AMO, visit the NYSDAM website.
